What are the origins of the Chevron logo?

Back in 1879, when the company was known as the Pacific Coast Oil Company, its logo embodied the ornate typography typical of the Victorian era.

In 1906, Pacific Coast Oil Company became Standard Oil Company of California (SOCAL), and a few years after that, in 1931, SOCAL introduced its chevron logo to “standardize brand identity and set it apart from competitors,” in the company’s words.
