Conan O’Brien, Giants owner listed as Bohemian Grove guests in leaked docs

A leaked document circulating online this week purports to show who was invited to the ultra-secret Bohemian Grove retreat in 2023 — the annual summer gathering in Sonoma County’s redwoods along the Russian River where powerful political, business and cultural figures retreat for two weeks of networking, performances and the famously theatrical “Cremation of Care” ceremony.

The more than 2,000-name list was published on Substack by independent journalist Daniel Boguslaw and first reported locally by the San Francisco Standard. The San Francisco-based Bohemian Club, which organizes the encampment near Monte Rio, declined to comment on the names and does not publicly confirm its membership or guest lists.

Among those appearing on the 2023 roster is comedian and podcaster Conan O’Brien, a somewhat unexpected entry for a gathering better known for titans of industry and former presidents. O’Brien emceed the nearby Monte Rio Variety Show in 2022, an annual local fundraiser that drew thousands, though available records do not confirm his presence at the 2023 retreat itself. The 2022 show also featured singer Jimmy Buffett, who died in September 2023. Buffett’s name likewise appears on the leaked 2023 Grove list.

Other names on the list are less surprising: former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, billionaire and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, political donor Charles Koch and venture capitalist Paul Pelosi, husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The Standard also reported that San Francisco Giants principal owner Charles B. Johnson and team chairman Greg Johnson appear on the list, along with Edwin Meese III, the former U.S. attorney general under Ronald Reagan, as well as heirs to the Bay Area-based Bechtel, Fisher and Mondavi family fortunes.

This news organization has not independently verified the document, and it is unclear whether it reflects confirmed attendees, invited guests or club members. The inclusion of actor Paul Newman, who died in 2008, suggests the list may include former members or historical records.

Founded in 1872, the Bohemian Club began as a haven for artists, writers and journalists. Over time, its ranks expanded to include presidents, Cabinet members and corporate leaders. The retreat unfolds each July at a private 2,700-acre compound, where members are divided into camps with names such as Camels, Cave Man, Dog House, Valhalla and Wild Oats.

Sam Singer, a spokesperson and listed member of the club, declined to address the specific names.

“The Bohemian Club is a private organization. It does not disclose the names of members and guests,” Singer told this news organization.

Boguslaw told the Standard he obtained the 2023 list in 2024 from a club member after repeated requests. He said he did not use subterfuge.

Because the club does not confirm attendance and the document has not been independently authenticated, it remains unclear who ultimately participated in the 2023 encampment.
